Unlucky Self-portraits of me washing my hair, with help from Ezekiel.
I wanted to portray the tension between navigating an individual’s wider cultural identity and their personal identity by subverting Lunar New Year superstitions. There’s lots of dos and do nots associated with the holiday that will bring you either good luck or total misfortune for the new year. On the first day of the new year, you must not wash or cut your hair. In Cantonese, hair is pronounced as faat (髮), which is the same as the word for “getting rich” (發). If you wash your hair, it means that you’re washing your own fortune away for the coming 364 days.
These prints are hand made by myself and are 1 of 1! x
